Payments

Four ways to pay, one tab.

M-Pesa goes straight to your own till. Cards, card terminals and cash sit on the same tab, and the day close matches every one of them.

Paying the bill by M-Pesa
Four ways to pay

However the table pays, it lands on the same bill.

M-Pesa

Straight to your own till or Paybill. The money never passes through Tumikia.

Card on the diner’s phone

Processed by our card partner, with 3-D Secure on every payment.

A card terminal

Staff record the terminal’s reference on the bill, and the day close reconciles it.

Cash

Through a till session with a float, a count and a variance.

Split bills, tips and overpayments are recorded on the same tab, against the way each one was paid.

How M-Pesa works

Three steps, and your staff hold the last one.

  1. 1
The bill says where to pay.

Your till or Paybill, the name M-Pesa will show and the exact amount — on the diner’s phone and on paper.

  2. 2
The diner pays and enters the code.

They type the confirmation code from their SMS into the bill, or show it to a waiter.

  3. 3
Staff confirm it on your own M-Pesa.

Only then does the order reach the kitchen. A code used before is refused, and one tab can be settled with several codes.

A code waiting at the till
Why staff check your own M-Pesa

Fake confirmation messages exist. The message on a diner’s phone is never the proof; your own M-Pesa is. A code waiting for confirmation is highlighted, blinks and chimes on the floor and till screens, so it cannot sit unnoticed.

Day close

Every payment matched, or named.

M-Pesa codes, terminal references and cash are each matched at the day close. Anything that doesn’t match becomes a variance against the person who recorded it.

Phone orders

Take it now, collect when it’s ready.

A restaurant can choose to take phone orders unpaid and collect on delivery or collection. When the order is ready, you call or text the customer with a pay link, for card or M-Pesa.

Cards on the phone

3-D Secure on every card payment.

Card payments on the diner’s phone are processed by our card partner, with 3-D Secure on every one, and settle to your M-Pesa or bank within 2 business days.

Questions

Questions we get about payments.

No. Diners pay your own till or Paybill directly. The money never passes through Tumikia, and Tumikia adds nothing to M-Pesa payments.

We’ll put your till on a test bill and walk you through a code, a card and the day close.
