Front-end engineer, diner app

Engineering · Nairobi or remote in East Africa · Full time

You build what diners hold in their hands: the menu that opens when they scan the table's QR code, the basket, and the payment. It has to open in under two seconds on a five-year-old Android on a weak line, and work for someone who has never used it before.

What you will do

  • Build and improve the diner app: menu, ordering, payment and order tracking.
  • Measure speed on real low-end phones and slow networks, and make it faster.
  • Work with the field and support teams, and spend time in restaurants during service watching people use it.
  • Ship small changes often, with tests.

What you bring

  • Solid experience with TypeScript and React. Next.js is a plus.
  • Care for performance: bundle size, slow networks, low-end devices.
  • Care for accessibility and plain language in the interface.
  • An interest in payments, M-Pesa in particular, is welcome.

Where

Nairobi, or remote anywhere in East Africa. Full time.

How hiring works

  • We read every application. A person on the team you applied to reads it, not a filter.
  • A call of about 20 minutes: what you have done, what you want next, and what the role involves.
  • One practical task or a day with us.
  • A decision either way. You hear from us whether it is yes or no.
